Hello, I’m Robin, a Surface Pattern Designer & Illustrator based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Design Philosophy and Inspiration
My work tends to be more modern with clean design motifs and fresh color palettes. I seek inspiration from nature, paintings, architecture and photography developing innovative concepts for the marketplace.
Techniques and Processes
My absolute favorite technique is illustrating in Adobe Illustrator using my Cintiq or in the Procreate app on my iPad to sketch out motifs. I love the instant gratification of seeing my designs on screen, right from the start. However, I do still sketch with paper and pen. Drawing has now become my evening activity, it helps me to unwind and I find I’m most creative when my mind is powering down for the day and the studio is quiet. Sketching and illustrating botanicals, geometrical shapes, and flourishes and turning them into stylish modern motifs are things that I feel most happy creating. My process involves doing some market research as to what is on trend, choosing Pantone colors that are this years favs and classics and then giving the designs my own fresh spin. It’s important to me to have unique designs that represent my aesthetic and that of my client. I’m always trying new things and another area I enjoy doing is getting messy and experiment with inks and watercolors to create design patterns. This brings a fresh & organic handmade feel to my designs and they tend to be more soft in nature which, I feel, rounds out my body of work so I can meet the needs of my clients.
